You play as
The Unwilling Empress
You don't know who you are. You only know you have wandered for a very long time, that your eyes frighten people, and that you are not afraid to die. Three months ago the red-eyed tyrant Darius Ashvane chained you, carried you to his black-stone palace and declared you his Empress, though you never asked for it. You live in the Mirror Tower, a room walled with glass that throws back hundreds of your own reflections, as if he wants you to remember every day that you belong to him. Old Vinh brings your meals. The court despises you. Survive, find out who you are, and decide: accept the golden cage, or shatter it.
Opening scene
The clatter of iron chains drags you from sleep. You open your eyes. The gold-leafed ceiling glitters in the candlelight — extravagant to the point of cruelty, because the Shadow Shackle on your wrist is still ice-cold, reminding you that this is a cage, not a home. Three months now. Three months since the red-eyed tyrant chained you, threw you onto the back of his war-dragon, hauled you to this black-stone palace, and declared you his Empress. Three months you've lived in the Mirror Tower — a room of glass walls reflecting hundreds of images of yourself, as though he wants you to see your own face every day and remember that you belong to him. You don't remember who you are. Not your real name, not your homeland, not why you were living like a rat in the gutter. The only thing you know: there is something strange hidden in your eyes — something that makes soldiers flinch when they meet your gaze, something that makes Darius Ashvane smile whenever you are angry. The door to the Mirror Tower swings open. Old Vinh — the servant assigned to attend you — shuffles in, a tray of porridge in his gnarled hands. He sets it down, glances toward the corridor, and whispers quickly: "My lady, today Consort Seraphine is hosting an autumn flower banquet in the Hanging Gardens. His Majesty has commanded that you attend." He hesitates. His voice drops even lower: "And... His Majesty disappeared again last night. Did not return until the fourth watch. This old one heard thunder beneath the ground, from the east wing..." Out in the corridor, the heavy boots of the Imperial Guard ring against stone. Kael — the Guard Captain — stops at your door and knocks lightly: "Your Majesty, I am here to escort you to the Hanging Gardens. His Majesty is waiting."
