Your magic was never the curse. The crown was.

You are a scholar born with the wrong kind of magic — the kind that marks you as filth in the eyes of every noble in the empire. When you accept a position as tutor inside the Grand Estate of the most powerful family in the realm, you expect scorn. You don't expect the heir to the throne to look at you the way no one has ever looked at you before. And you certainly don't expect to discover that the "curse" your people carry was manufactured — a centuries-old lie designed to keep one bloodline on the throne. Now you must choose: survive quietly, or burn the empire's rotten foundation to the ground with the man who was born to sit on top of it.

This is a Gamification story powered by AI. The characters are generated by a machine, not written by a person, and they can be wrong or make things up.

You play as

The Ashmarked Healer

You are a healer. Your magic grows in soil and blooms in wounds — you can coax a dying plant back to life, draw poison from blood, mend broken bones with a touch. It is gentle, powerful, and — according to every law in the Aurelian Empire — proof that you are corrupted. The red birthmark on your skin brands you as Ashmarked: untouchable, unclean, unwelcome in any noble house. You accepted the tutoring position at Montclair Hall because Lady Helena offered enough gold to fund a clinic in your home province. You expected hostility. You did not expect the Grand Duke's heir to look at you like you were the most fascinating problem he had ever encountered. You did not expect to look back. And you certainly did not expect to find, buried beneath this beautiful, golden palace, evidence that everything your people have suffered for 350 years was built on a lie.

Opening scene

The gates of Montclair Hall are thirty feet of white marble and golden filigree, and they open for you like a mouth. You step through with your single bag over your shoulder and your chin level with the horizon. The courtyard stretches ahead — a vast expanse of polished stone, fountains that arc with liquid light, hedgerows trimmed into shapes too perfect to be natural. Servants in white-and-gold livery pause to stare. None of them greet you. They've seen the mark. The Ashmark — a birthmark the color of dark wine, shaped like a vine — sits exactly where it has sat since the day you were born. In your home province, it means you are a healer. Here, in the golden heart of the Aurelian Empire, it means you are a disease. A footman approaches. He stops three paces away — the mandated distance for addressing Ashmarked individuals. He does not make eye contact. "The Dowager Duchess expects you in her sitting room. Follow the marked path. Do not deviate. Do not touch the furnishings." You follow the marked path — a narrow strip of grey stone cutting through the golden courtyard like a scar. The separate path. The clean path. The path that says: you may walk here, but you do not belong here. Helena's sitting room is warm, cluttered with books, and smells like lavender tea. She rises when you enter — rises, which no Goldblood has ever done in the presence of an Ashmarked — and extends her hand. "My dear. Thank you for coming. I trust the journey was tolerable?" Behind her, through the window, you see the main courtyard. A man in white stands on the upper terrace, arms behind his back, watching the grounds below. Golden hair. Perfect posture. He turns his head — and for one instant, his golden eyes catch yours through the glass. Lysander Montclair. The heir. The Ice Duke. The man you were told, in no uncertain terms, to avoid. He does not look away. Neither do you. Helena follows your gaze and smiles — a small, knowing, slightly dangerous smile. "Ah. Yes. My grandson. Don't worry about him. He's very... focused."

Characters You'll Meet

Lysander Montclair

The Ice Duke

Heir to the Aurelian Throne. Pale gold hair, golden eyes, white and gold from collar to cuff — and not one wasted gesture. You were told, in no uncertain terms, to avoid him.

Helena

Dowager Duchess of House Montclair

Dowager Duchess Helena Montclair, Lysander's grandmother — the woman who hired you, and the only Goldblood who has ever risen to greet you. Silver hair worn loose, a cane, and golden eyes that miss nothing.

Lady Iris

The Little Duchess

Lady Iris Montclair, Lysander's twelve-year-old sister and your student. Golden eyes, dark braids, shoes kicked off under the table, and far too many questions.

Lady Vivienne

The Gilded Cage

Lady Vivienne Carlisle, Lysander's arranged fiancée. Honey-blonde hair, green eyes, gowns worth more than a village — and a practised smile she saves especially for you.

Duke Aldric

The Iron Patriarch

Duke Aldric Montclair, Lysander's father and head of the House. Steel-grey hair, cold golden eyes, ceremonial armour even at dinner. To him you are not a person; you are a disruption.
