Story Overview

Eighteen hours. Three lives. One cipher that lies.

A stolen doomsday weapon is counting down beneath a holy city. You are a disgraced symbol-decoder forced to team up with the fanatical captain of the Church's witch-hunters in a 24-hour race through ancient architecture, coded riddles, and political betrayal — never suspecting that the one pulling every string is the person you both trust the most.

This is a Gamification story powered by AI. The characters are generated by a machine, not written by a person, and they can be wrong or make things up.

You play as

The Decoder

You are a symbol-decoder — one of the few people alive who can read the ancient inscriptions buried in Aurantheum's architecture. You spent years in the Church's own research institute, quietly cataloging ciphers that most priests would call blasphemous. That curiosity got you arrested two weeks ago on charges of heretical study. You were sitting in a cell awaiting trial when the world fell apart. Now you've been dragged out, handed your confiscated notebook, and told to save the city — under the watchful eye of Captain Marcus Valerian, a man who would happily have burned you at the stake yesterday. You have 18 hours, a fanatical bodyguard who doesn't trust you, and a trail of ancient symbols that may be the only thing standing between the capital and annihilation.

Opening scene

The cell door crashes open and the torchlight blinds you. Two soldiers haul you to your feet before your eyes adjust. Your wrists are still raw from the manacles they removed — when? — minutes ago. The stone floor is cold under your bare feet. Somewhere above, cathedral bells are tolling. They haven't stopped for hours. "Move," one of the soldiers grunts, and shoves you down the corridor. They march you up three flights of stairs, through a heavy oak door, and into a room that smells of incense and fear. A long table. Maps spread across it, pinned at the corners with daggers. A cluster of Cardinals arguing in low, furious voices. And standing apart from all of them, arms folded, jaw set like a man chewing iron — Captain Marcus Valerian of the Witch-Hunter Corps. He looks at you the way a man looks at a weapon he doesn't want to use. A Cardinal — the oldest one, silver-haired, calm amid the chaos — steps forward. You recognize him: Cardinal Aldric Thorne. The most respected voice in the Solar Clergy. Marcus's mentor. "My child," Thorne says, his voice warm despite everything. "I apologize for the manner of your retrieval. We are in extraordinary circumstances." He gestures to the maps. "The Grand Pontiff is dead. The Aether-Void has been stolen. Three Archmages are in the hands of people claiming to be the Aethel Illuminati. One is already dead." He pauses. His eyes — calm, brown, fatherly — settle on yours. "You are the only person in this city who can read the ciphers they've left behind. Captain Valerian will escort you. Time is not on our side." Marcus steps forward. He drops your confiscated notebook — your Decoder's Codex — onto the table in front of you. His expression says he'd rather be doing anything else. "Eighteen hours," he says. "Don't make me regret this."

Characters You'll Meet

Marcus Valerian

The Paladin

Captain of the Witch-Hunter Corps, and your assigned escort and enforcer. Steel-blue eyes, silver-and-white armour, a blessed longsword — and yesterday he would happily have burned you at the stake.

Cardinal Aldric Thorne

Senior Cardinal of the Solar Clergy

The most respected Cardinal in the Solar Clergy, and Marcus's mentor. Silver-haired, calm, fatherly — the one steady voice in a city coming apart.

Duchess Eleanor Valerian

The Iron Mother

Marcus's mother, head of the most powerful military family in the Dominion. Iron-grey hair, dark blue velvet, and the same piercing blue eyes as her son.

Brother Emeric

The Reluctant Witness

A young, low-ranking monk who served the Grand Pontiff. Thin, nervous, ink-stained — and barely holding together.

Prince Cassian

The Young King

Heir to the throne, due to be crowned at dawn — if the capital survives the night. More poet than warrior, and never quite comfortable in royal white and gold.
