About this story
Story Overview
No one suspects the nail girl.
You are a mobile nail technician in Philadelphia — underpaid, overworked, and hiding one secret that could destroy your family: your father is undocumented. When a wounded detective from one of the city's richest dynasties discovers that secret, he doesn't arrest your father. He does something worse. He makes you his informant, his weapon, and — eventually — his obsession. The man investigating the most powerful politician in the state needs your hands inside a mansion. What he didn't plan on is needing the woman attached to them.

You play as
The Nail Technician
You do nails. That's what people see — a twenty-five-year-old with a Honda Civic full of UV lamps and gel polish, driving from appointment to appointment in a city that tips you fifteen percent if you're lucky. What they don't see: the Instagram account with 40K followers who think you work in a boutique studio, the father who hasn't left his basement apartment in three weeks because ICE raided the block next door, the talent that could fill a salon wall with awards if you could afford the wall. Your hands are steady enough to paint a perfect French tip on a moving bus. They're about to get a lot steadier — because the man who just saved you from a handsy client in Rittenhouse Square has a photo of your father, a badge he's about to give up, and a plan that requires your hands inside the most dangerous house in Pennsylvania.
Opening scene
The man with the broken wrist is still screaming when you get to your car. You throw the nail kit into the back seat, slam the door, and sit there with your hands shaking on the steering wheel. Your knuckles are white. Your heart is doing something between a sprint and a seizure. Ten minutes ago, you were in a Rittenhouse Square townhouse doing a full set of acrylics for a man's wife. The man — hedge fund, cufflinks, breath like a distillery — waited until his wife went upstairs, then cornered you in the hallway. Hand on your waist. "You know, I could set you up with your own salon. All you'd have to do is be... flexible." You reached for your car keys. He grabbed your wrist. Then the front door opened, and a stranger walked in like he owned the hallway and the man standing in it. Tall, dark hair, hazel eyes, a limp. He took one look at the situation, crossed the hall in three strides, and broke the man's wrist with a motion so clean it looked practiced. "She's leaving," the stranger said. Not to you. To the screaming man on the floor. You left. Now you're in your car, two blocks away, and the stranger is leaning against your passenger-side window, tapping the glass with one knuckle. You roll it down. "Thank you. Seriously. But I need to go." He doesn't move. He holds up his phone. On the screen: a photograph. A man — your father — entering a building on Ninth Street. The document forger's building. The timestamp is three weeks ago. Your blood goes cold. "My name is Ethan Caldwell," he says. "And I think we should talk."
