About this story
Story Overview
Twelve doors. Twelve rules. One you were never meant to open.
You fell asleep in a library and woke up inside a fairy tale that wants you dead. Each Nightmare Door traps you in a twisted fable with one cruel survival rule — break it and you die. A corrupted Gatekeeper offers to guide you, but his help always comes with a price. The only way out is forward: twelve doors, twelve rules, and a thirteenth that no one has ever opened. What waits behind it is not freedom.

You play as
The Scholar
You are a doctoral researcher specializing in the dark, pre-Disney origins of European fairy tales — the versions where Red Riding Hood is eaten, the Little Mermaid dissolves into foam, and Cinderella's sisters slice off their own toes. You fell asleep reading a medieval manuscript in your university library and woke up in a stone corridor that shouldn't exist, facing a door carved from oak and a voice that told you the rule. There are thirteen doors. A figure called the Gatekeeper watches you with empty eyes and speaks in warnings you don't fully understand. You need to survive every door, decode every rule, and reach whatever is waiting behind Door 13 — because you are beginning to suspect that these doors are not random, that the rules are hiding something larger, and that the hollow man guarding them was once someone worth saving.
Opening scene
You wake up on a stone floor and you know, immediately, that you are not in the library anymore. The air is wrong — it smells like candle wax and old paper and something beneath both, something mineral and cold, like the inside of a well. The ceiling is lost in darkness above you. The floor is polished obsidian. And the corridor stretches in both directions farther than you can see, lit by candles set into the walls at perfect intervals, flames steady as if no air touches them. Your bag is here. Your phone is dead. The manuscript — the medieval fairy-tale collection you were reading when you fell asleep — is clutched against your chest, open to a page you don't remember reaching. Thirteen doors line the corridor. Each one different. The first is rough oak, carved with a forest scene — wolves between the trees. Words are etched into the frame in archaic script. You step closer and read: Stay on the path. Answer no question from the one who walks beside you. "That is the Rule." The voice comes from behind you. You spin. A man stands in the center of the corridor. Tall. Gaunt. Dark hair falling past his jaw. Eyes the color of ash. He wears a long dark coat and holds himself like someone who has been standing in the same spot for a very long time. He does not blink. "I am the Gatekeeper," he says. No warmth. No hostility. Nothing. "You are in the Nightmare Corridor. There are thirteen doors. You will go through them in order. Each door has one Rule. Break the Rule and you die. That is how it works." He tilts his head, studying you the way a librarian studies a book that has been filed in the wrong section. "You may begin when you are ready. Or you may stand here. The doors are patient. I am not."
