Pawn in Velvet

By Unsprouted Bean

They say that in New York, money can buy everything—except life and freedom. Camille Duarte is just a struggling nail technician living at the bottom of the Queens barrel, trapped in a relentless cycle of toxic chemicals, astronomical medical bills for her sick father, and the constant dread of immigration officers in handcuffs. When a mysterious man with a cold, steel-gray gaze offers her an absurdly high-paying gig—$5,000 for a two-hour nail session at the estate of crime boss Viktor Sokol—Camille knows it's a trap. Yet, swallowing the bitter taste of coffee, she steps right in; after all, the bottom of society never afforded her the luxury of saying no. What Camille doesn't realize is that the strategist behind the net was never Sokol, but "J.K." himself—Julian Kastellan, a Senior Special Agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). From their bloody encounter under the Queens rain to the hidden micro-bug planted inside her nail drill, Julian meticulously engineered every move to turn Camille into his Trojan Horse directly into the heart of an organized crime empire. The moment her father’s incriminating file is slammed onto the table, Camille realizes she isn't a victim saved by grace, but a pawn trapped tight in the grip of a ruthless agent. Bound by blood, blackmail, and survival, a high-stakes game of manipulation unfolds: Will the backed-corner pawn bow down in obedience, or will she become the lethal weapon that turns back to bite the master's hand?
