A dry autumn wind swept through the narrow alley, kicking up crisp leaves and carrying the damp, stale stench of weathered brick.
Camille stood frozen. The thin leather of her jacket was pressed flush against the cold stone wall. Both her wrists remained trapped in the solid, gloved grip of Julian’s hands. A suffocating tightness gripped her chest, making her breath come in short, ragged gasps that brushed against the agent's chest—solid as cold steel.
The fragmented memories of the past forty-eight hours shattered and reassembled in her mind into a single picture so ruthlessly calculated it made her sick to her stomach.
The staged collision on the sidewalk... the brutal, practiced ease with which he snapped the bouncer's shoulder... the glass of water on her kitchen table in Queens... the sleek black polymer business card... and that morning at Le Petit Café on Madison Avenue.
All of it! Everything she had mistaken for a lifeline, an unexpected way out dangling in the dark... was nothing more than a sequence of moves hand-carved by a apex predator. He had never been a "good Samaritan." He was a hunter, and she and her father had been trapped in his snare from the very first second.
"Quite a performance, Agent Kastellan," Camille ground out, her voice trembling with a rage burning up from the very bottom of her soul. "Rescuing us from drunks, playing the chivalrous gentleman offering a high-paying job... Did you enjoy it? Watching me like a fool, taking your $5,000 bait and walking straight into your cage?"
Julian looked down at her. His steel-gray eyes offered no apology, no mockery. The coldness in his gaze was terrifyingly still—the look of a man who viewed violence, deception, and human manipulation purely as operational tools.
"I don't have time to put on plays for you, Camille," Julian released her wrists without hurry, taking a single step back while remaining positioned to block the alley's only exit. "In my line of work, there are no fateful encounters. There are only targets and methods. You and your father happen to be the most efficient method for me to tear down Sokol's network."
"So you use my father to blackmail me?" She held up her wrists, red and bruised from his grip, her thin lips trembling. "He's a sick old man! He has spent eight years hiding in the shadows just to keep me in school, to let me live like a human being! Do you have any idea that if he gets thrown into a federal cell or deported back to Colombia, he will die?"
"I know," Julian replied, his voice as flat as frozen water. "Which is precisely why I am standing here negotiating with you, instead of bringing twelve armed agents to breach your door at three in the morning."
He slid one hand into his overcoat pocket, using the other to casually pick up the yellow dossier off the ground. He dusted off the grit, tucking it under his arm.
"I am not cruel without purpose, Camille," Julian dropped his tone, carrying a heavy, quiet weight of conviction. "Look at the reality: Your father broke federal law. The evidence of him formulating counterfeit paper stock for Sokol is real—it wasn't manufactured by me. Even without my involvement, other ICE agents would have tracked him down next week or next month. And when they do, nobody offers him a way out."
Camille clenched her fists, her nails digging so deep into her palms they drew blood. The bitter truth of his words squeezed around her throat like an iron hand. He was right. Her father had been walking on thin ice all along, and Julian’s arrival was simply the trigger that cracked it sooner.
"What is your 'way out'?" She glared at him, matching his gaze word for word.
"Your cooperation," Julian laid his card straight on the table. "You keep going to the Sokol estate twice a week as their private nail tech. Your hands give you access to the most secure quarters of that house—places my agents can never step foot into. You simply do your job and keep your eyes open: floor plans, secondary exits, the location of Sokol's safe, phone calls he takes in front of you, or documents he casually leaves on his desk."
"And in exchange?"
"In exchange, Rafael Duarte’s file stays locked inside my personal safe," Julian said, his eyes unwavering. "I will grant him a temporary cover identity, looking the other way regarding his existence for the duration of this operation. Once Sokol is in cuffs, I will place your father into the Witness Protection Program (WITSEC). He will receive legal U.S. residency, a suspended sentence for cooperating with federal law enforcement, and most importantly: his life."
The offer hung suspended in the dark alley.
On one side lay an abyss: her father arrested, imprisoned, and deported to a death sentence.
On the other lay a razor's edge: walking into the den of a ruthless crime lord, acting as an informant for a cold, heartless fed.
Camille drew in a deep breath. The icy air flooding her lungs cleared away the blinding fog of her rage. She was a daughter of Queens. She knew when to fight, and she knew when to bow before absolute power to survive.
"You want me to be your spy," Camille lifted her chin, her brown eyes flashing with a sharp, dangerous clarity—the panic gone, replaced by the cold focus of someone accepting the game. "Fine. But I have conditions."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. Her rapid psychological shift caught his attention once more. Most civilians in her position would break down in tears or panic. Camille Duarte didn't. She negotiated.
"You are in no position to dictate terms, Camille," Julian reminded her coolly.
"I AM in a position to set conditions, Agent Kastellan!" Camille took a step forward, meeting him face-to-face, less than an arm's length apart. "Without my willing cooperation, you won't get a single piece of actionable intel out of that estate. A forced, compromised informant will blow her cover or ruin the operation. You need me, don't you?"
Julian remained silent for two seconds. For the first time, a flicker of genuine evaluation passed through his steel-gray eyes.
"Name them," he said flatly.
"First: You guarantee my father's absolute safety throughout this entire operation. If any other HSI agents or ICE officers come anywhere near my building, you handle it personally," Camille held up a firm finger. "Second: The full $5,000 for every session at Sokol's estate... I keep it. That is my legitimate labor, and you don't touch a cent of it."
Julian’s lips twitched. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk of implicit respect for her sharpness.
"I accept those terms," Julian nodded. "And I add one non-negotiable clause of my own: You report exclusively to me. No one else at HSI knows you exist. Every piece of intel you gather comes directly to my hands, and mine alone."
"Deal."
Camille uttered the word feeling as though she had just signed her name onto a contract with the devil.
Julian stepped aside, clearing the alley's exit. "Go home, Miss Duarte. Wash your face and act normal in front of your father. Monday morning, the car picks you up as planned."
Camille didn't give him a second glance. She bent down, grabbed her equipment case, and hurried out of the alley, leaving Julian standing alone in the falling twilight.
11:00 PM.
The second-floor apartment in Queens was draped in heavy, exhausted silence.
Rafael was asleep after taking a fresh dose of blood pressure medication Camille had purchased with her advance pay. The old man knew nothing of the fiery confrontation in the alley earlier. He only knew his daughter had landed a high-paying job for a wealthy family in Long Island.
In her small bedroom, Camille sat slumped over her vanity table.
The desk lamp cast a pale yellow glow over her tired face and slightly trembling hands. Sitting on the wooden surface was the sleek black encrypted phone Julian had handed her at the café.
Her rage had cooled, leaving behind a cold, hollow dread that gripped her chest.
Camille picked up the phone. She opened the menu and navigated through its settings. It looked like an ordinary classic flip-phone, its contact list containing a single number: Julian's.
But Camille was no naive girl. Vigilance had been bred into her blood through years spent in the city's shadows.
She stood up, pulling a small tool kit used for repairing nail drills from her drawer. Selecting a micro mechanical screwdriver, she carefully pried open the phone's plastic back cover.
The inner casing popped open, revealing a thin lithium battery.
Camille narrowed her eyes. Beneath the SIM card slot, beside the standard processor chip, sat a tiny, pea-sized green auxiliary board soldered directly onto the device's mainboard.
She brought her nail inspection magnifying glass close to it.
On that auxiliary board, a tiny red LED light pulsed softly once every three seconds—a continuous beacon signal.
An advanced GPS global tracking chip combined with a passive audio receiver.
Camille went completely still. A cold shiver ran from the crown of her head to the tips of her toes.
This phone wasn't just a communication tool. It was an invisible leash. Julian Kastellan didn't just want her gathering intel inside the Sokol estate... he wanted to track her every step, her location, and her movements twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He wanted her entire life locked in the palm of his hand.
"You bastard..." Camille whispered, her voice shaking in the dark room.
She raised the screwdriver, ready to jam it directly into the microchip. But her hand froze midair.
If she destroyed the chip, Julian would know instantly. And that rash act of defiance could trigger Rafael's arrest before sunrise.
Camille slowly lowered the screwdriver. She snapped the back cover into place and set the phone back down on the wooden desk. The small red LED light continued to pulse silently beneath the black plastic casing—like the cold, unblinking red eye of the agent watching her from the shadows of Manhattan.
She walked over to the window, staring out at the empty, rain-slicked Queens street.
Camille realized then that she was completely caught in his web. From this moment on, every step she took, every breath she drew, existed under the watchful gaze of Julian Kastellan. She had become a pawn on his board—a pawn with no way to retreat.
Camille pressed her lips firmly together, her dark brown eyes reflecting the streetlights, growing colder and fiercer than ever before.
If you want me to be your pawn, Agent Kastellan... she thought, her hands clenching into hard fists. Then you had better pray this piece doesn't turn around and tear your hand to pieces.
