"Blood spilled on the stone floor of the dungeon never dries; it seeps into the soil of Rome, waiting for the day it blooms into blades that pierce the hearts of those who sow deceit."

Night on the Palatine Hill had never known true peace.

As ink-dark shadows spilled across the blinding white marble columns of the imperial district, the space split into two terrifyingly distinct worlds. Above, glittering with candlelight, the grand halls echoed with the delicate notes of the lyre, the sharp clinking of silver goblets, and the gossipy laughter of Rome's ruling class. But deep underground, beneath the cool, stone-lined corridors of the Suburra, the whistling lash of leather whips, the scraping of iron chains against rough rock, and brutal moans quietly bled through the mortar. That was the price of luxury—the blood and humiliation of the countless crushed beneath the eagle's talon.

Inside the spacious bedchamber of the private villa within the Tullo estate, the air was thick with the suffocating scent of Egyptian incense. The expensive resin, burning slowly in a bronze censer carved with the shape of a sea dragon, was sickeningly sweet, yet it failed to mask the ancient stench of decaying flesh and bitter, spilled sour wine.

Claudia Marcellina stood silently before a full-length, polished bronze mirror.

Her long, slender fingers meticulously fastened a hawk-carved mother-of-pearl brooch on the shoulder of her stola. The deep purple silk imported from the East flowed like water over the curves of her body, hugging the slender yet proud frame of a noblewoman who had just turned twenty-two. Her arms were milk-white, her delicate shoulders sinking into the flickering candlelight like a statue carved from alabaster.

The face reflected in the polished bronze was cold to the point of perfection. Her dark brown eyes were as deep as an autumn lake, betraying not even the slightest ripple. Her thin lips were pressed into a straight, hard line, shaping an aura of guarded sharpness. Her pale, flawless skin was entirely free of wrinkles—a beauty potent enough to make any man in Rome stop and stare with hunger.

Yet no one looking upon that ethereal face could have guessed that beneath the luxurious, haughty purple silk, across the fragile skin of her spine, inner thighs, and chest lay bruised, blood-caked welts—overlapping lash marks, the brutal tokens left behind by every fit of her elderly husband's sadistic frenzy.

"Claudia."

A hoarse, phlegm-choked voice rose from behind her, tearing through the quiet.

Claudia’s spine stiffened for a fraction of a second, but she did not startle or whip her head around. Long ago, she had trained every muscle and breath in her body to display zero fear or unease in his presence.

Senator Servius Tullo stepped out from behind the gold-threaded velvet curtains. He was past sixty, his heavy, bloated body sagging beneath the luxurious purple-bordered toga that symbolized the absolute power of the Senate. His squinting eyes were sunk in greasy, depraved grey shadows, his nose hooked like a bird of prey, and his thick lips dulled by sour wine. He approached with slow, heavy steps, his jewel-studded oxhide shoes striking the Persian carpet with dull thuds.

He stopped directly behind her. A heavy, ruthless hand covered in age spots rested on her shoulder, then suddenly dug in, brutally gripping the slender column of her neck from behind.

The crude pressure instantly choked off the air in Claudia’s throat. Long, filthy fingernails laden with jade rings reeking of musk dug deep into her delicate skin, intentionally blooming a bloody red welt. Her linen under-layer slipped askew, exposing a patch of bruised, purplish-black skin beneath her collarbone.

"Good girl, my little doll," Servius murmured, his foul breath reeking of fermented wine and raw mutton washing straight over her senses. "You look magnificent tonight... Those miserable old senators in the Senate will drool with lust tonight... And why? Because I, Servius Tullo, possess a whore of the highest noble blood."

Humiliation surged up the bridge of her nose, tearing at her lungs, but Claudia’s eyelashes did not even flutter. She raised her gaze, reflecting the bloated shadow of the man in her steady brown pupils, and slowly turned her head.

She met him with a smile.

It was an obedient, innocent, fragile, and utterly submissive smile—the very smile she had practiced before the bronze mirror thousands of times during her loneliest nights.

"My presence tonight serves only one purpose: to magnify your glory and power, Servius," she said, her voice clear, gentle, and smooth as water flowing over stones. She tilted her head slightly, obediently letting his filthy hand slide through her glossy dark curls.

Servius looked at that smile, the sadistic perversion in his eyes stroked as if by an invisible hand. A guttural chuckle rattled deep in his throat; he released her slim neck and brought his heavy palm down in a sharp, brutal slap against her hip. A dry crack echoed through the room, causing the muscles beneath her fabric to contract in agony.

"Let’s go! Don’t keep my honored guests waiting! Tonight, I want you to be the center of every craving!"

He turned and strode away, his heavy toga dragging across the stone floor.

Behind his lumbering, bloated back, the smile on Claudia’s lips vanished in an instant. The gentle brown eyes from a moment before transformed into two deep, hollow sockets—cold, ruthless, and brimming with lethal intent. She quietly raised a slender hand, smoothing the folds of her purple silk, carefully pulling her collar high to hide the fresh red welt and the old bruises beneath.

Shrewd. Enduring. Patiently biding her time.

Claudia understood the mechanics of this Empire better than anyone. In a world ruled by brutal, power-mad men who viewed women as property, reckless defiance or weak tears led to only one outcome: an ignominious death in an unknown dark cellar, or a neatly orchestrated "accident" in the Tiber River.

If she wanted to survive, if she wanted to crush the man who had turned her life into a prison, she had to transform herself into poison wrapped in the sweetest sugar shell. She would wait, day by hour, hiding the sharpest blade in her heart, waiting for the exact moment to drive it straight down her enemy's throat.

The great hall of the Tullo household blazed with the light of hundreds of prime beef-tallow candles. The extravagant space was decorated with gilded reliefs and towering Corinthian marble columns supporting a vaulted ceiling carved with the figures of the Olympian gods.

The bustling chatter of Rome’s ruling elite—senators, generals returned from the frontier, and wealthy slave traders—blended with the hurried, lively notes of the lyre. Long ebony dining tables groaned under the weight of exotic delicacies: honey-roasted lamb shanks smoking hot, goose liver drizzled in herb reduction, stewed flamingo tongues in wine, and fine vintages chilled with snow hauled straight from the Alps.

Claudia sat beside Servius on a leopard-skin-upholstered couch reserved for the master of the house. She played the part of the utterly submissive wife to perfection: quietly pouring wine into his silver goblet, maintaining a coy smile at all moments, gracefully tilting her head to listen to the discourse, and bearing the hungry yet contemptuous gazes of Servius's fellow senators with absolute poise.

Yet beneath that innocent, obedient exterior, her sharp mind raced with extraordinary speed. Her brown eyes, veiled by long lashes, silently gathered every detail:

Senator Lucius, seated opposite, cast a venomous side-long glance at Servius while discussing tax collection rights in Gaul—a crack in their financial alliance.

General Marcus at the edge of the table stealthily passed a small scroll to a Levant slave merchant—an underground trade in banned weapons.

She memorized every name, every petty grievance, every weakness, and every depraved desire hidden beneath spotless white togas. This sordid pile of information was far from waste; to Claudia, these were priceless shards of a weapon she would collect day by day to forge the lever that would shatter the Tullo family.

Late into the night, when the candles began to gutter and sour wine had dulled heads reeking of power and arrogance, Servius Tullo stood. He slammed his silver cup hard against the marble tabletop.

Clang!

The jarring sound cut short every conversation and the notes of the lyre. Every guest turned their heads toward the dais.

"My brothers, proud elders of Rome!" Servius roared, his face flushed red with drunkenness, agitation, and erupting brutality. He waved a hand and swept his silver cup aside, sending deep red wine spilling out like a trail of fresh blood across the pristine white linen tablecloth.

"You think wars of expansion in the distant South bring only gold, ewes, and lazy farm slaves? You're wrong! Dead wrong!" Servius swept his squinting eyes across the crowd, a cruel, mad smile twisting his thick lips. "They bring the ultimate, most brutal entertainment this Roman Empire has ever witnessed!"

He turned and signaled the slave steward standing by the side of the hall.

"I just spent a jar of gold to buy a batch of 'new merchandise' straight from the Kavanu battlefield!" Servius bellowed, his voice echoing across the vaulted ceiling. "Lithe, muscular black men, wild as beasts! They don't know how to beg, they don't know how to bow, and they don't know what fear is!"

He stepped toward the edge of the dais, spreading his arms like a deity holding the power of life and death:

"Tomorrow night, in the private underground arena of this Tullo villa, I will debut a new pastime: forcing that entire batch of Kavanu prisoners to fight bare-handed against a pack of starved hyenas chained in total darkness for three days and nights! I want to see those proud, muscle-rippling southern bodies torn to shreds! I want to hear their bones snap beneath the jaws of beasts!"

Roar!

Cheers and frantic applause erupted from every table like a tidal wave of madness. The swaying Roman aristocrats burned with excitement at the prospect of blood and slaughter. They clinked cups, howling in celebration of the savage authority money and slaves afforded them.

Amidst the frenzied, brutal screaming of the surrounding crowd, Claudia remained seated in stillness upon the leopard-skin couch.

Her slim form resembled a poisonous snowflake blooming across a bloody swamp. She slowly raised her silver goblet to her thin lips, taking a measured sip of the bitter, sour wine.

Through the hazy mist of candle smoke and heavy wine, her brown eyes mirrored the flickering flames from the torch stands—deep, mysterious, silent, and cold as the touch of death.

She had no way of knowing that right beneath the cold stone floors where she rested her bare feet, deep within the damp, foul-smelling dungeon reeking of excrement, sweat, and fresh blood, Servius's "new merchandise" lay bound in dark iron chains. And that southern slave—possessing the eyes of a beast that refused to bow—was about to drag her into a bloody, life-or-death game, entirely rewriting the destinies of her, of him, and of the entire Roman Empire.
