A Lineage of Lies

Chapter 2

The Kavanu Prisoner

The stench of the earth can never be masked by any luxury incense from Persia or Egypt.

As Claudia’s bare feet, encased in thin leather sandals, descended the rough Suburra stone steps, the air instantly changed. Clammy, oppressive moisture condensed into ice-cold droplets along the patches of green moss on the walls. Deep beneath the lavish villa of the Tullo family, the corridor leading down to the dark dungeon resembled a giant throat swallowing the flickering light from the jailer’s torch.

The thick stench of blood mingled with excrement, aged sweat, and rotting flesh slammed straight into her nose.

Servius Tullo walked ahead. His bloated body swayed with each heavy step, his toga dragging across black, oily puddles on the stone floor. In his hand, he carried a silver-inlaid staff, striking it hard against the rock walls every so often to vent the depraved excitement left by the night’s drinking.

"Hurry up, my little doll," Servius turned back, his squinting, bloodshot eyes sweeping over Claudia’s slender frame. He flashed a disgusting smile, revealing yellowed teeth. "You must witness these beasts with your own eyes before we throw them to the arena. Southern men... they only have value when crushed beneath Rome's heel!"

Claudia did not answer. She silently lifted the hem of her purple silk dress to keep it from brushing against the filth of the dungeon floor. Her face maintained its obedient, fragile, almost pitiful expression, but the deep brown eyes behind her long lashes quietly scanned every corner.

The deeper they plunged into the belly of the vault, the more frantic the clinking of iron chains became. The heavy gasps and harsh clearing of throats from the captives echoed off the cold stone walls.

The jailer stopped before a solid, cast-black iron gate caked in rust like dried blood. He produced a massive ring of keys and unlocked it. The jarring snap of metal gears echoed through the stillness.

Clack! Crack!

The heavy gate groaned open, revealing a vast, damp, and pitch-black space. Torchlight spilled inside, illuminating towering figures bound tightly to the stone walls.

They were the Kavanu prisoners—southern warriors captured alive during the Roman army’s brutal conquest.

Over twenty muscular men sat or lay in squalor upon the wet stone floor. Across their proud, bronze skin lay hundreds of intersecting slash scars, undried fresh blood congealing into dark black crusts. Heavy iron chains bit deep into their wrists, ankles, and necks, pinning those powerful bodies down into the filth.

Many of them had exhausted themselves. Seeing Servius and the blazing torch, some prisoners shrank into the shadows, their eyes flashing with the instinctive terror of trapped beasts. Others groaned, pleading in a strange southern tongue, foam bubbling at the corners of their lips from hunger and thirst.

Servius laughed with sadistic glee. He stepped close to a kneeling prisoner, raised his silver-inlaid staff, and brutally shoved it against the blood-matted forehead.

"Look at this! Are these the ones the Senate calls the 'southern threat'?" Servius spat a thick wad of phlegm onto the convulsing prisoner's chest. "Nothing more than a pack of animals! Tomorrow night, when the hyenas tear out their throats, I'll prop my chin and savor whether this black blood tastes any different!"

His cruel laughter reverberated through the vault.

Claudia stood a few paces away. Her alabaster skin contrasted sharply with the gloomy, filthy darkness of the prison. She glided silently past every tattered body, every face distorted by agony. Roman cruelty was no longer new to her, but the suffocating air of this dungeon left her throat tasting of ash.

Then, Claudia’s steps faltered.

In the deepest corner of the dungeon, where darkness clung thickest and the torchlight barely licked the edge of the space, a towering figure sat motionless upon a stone ledge.

That man was entirely unlike the rest.

He did not slump his head. He did not hug the wall. He neither begged nor groaned.

The system of chains wrapped around his body was twice as thick as those on the other prisoners—massive cast-iron hoops locked tightly around his wrists, both shoulders, and thick ankles, pinning him immovably to the stone pillar behind him. Yet his posture possessed a strange, regal authority, resembling a king seated upon his own rusted throne.

His bronze skin rippled with muscular definition sculpted from ebony wood. Across his chest and shoulders lay countless crisscrossing scars—trophies from countless life-or-death battles. His braided black hair fell across broad shoulders, matted with road dust and dried blood, yet it failed to obscure the chiseled, intensely masculine, and heroic lines of his face.

Jabari.

The proud general of the Kavanu lands.

Servius noticed Claudia’s attention. He chuckled and stepped close to Jabari, raising his silver staff to point straight at the man’s face.

"Ah, here he is! The alpha beast!" Servius gritted his teeth, his voice laced with hidden malice. "This bastard beat eight of my Roman soldiers to death before he was chained. Four days without a drop of water, three days without a morsel of food, and yet he still breathes. But no matter... tomorrow night, I’ll make sure he is the last one torn apart by hyenas!"

Servius swung his staff, intentionally striking Jabari’s bleeding knee.

Crack!

A dry impact rang out through the vault. A fresh tear burst open on the bronze skin, dark red blood trickling down his rugged calf.

Yet Jabari did not even blink. His body did not flinch once, nor did a single groan escape his throat. He treated Servius’s brutality like a passing toxic wind, completely ignoring the bloated senator dancing with rage.

That icy indifference served as a slap across Servius’s pride. He roared, raising his staff to deal an even more brutal blow to Jabari’s temple.

"Servius..."

Claudia’s gentle, bell-like voice cut short the arc of his arm.

He stopped, turning to glare at her with petulant annoyance: "What?"

Claudia stepped closer by a stride, her slender hands lightly brushing against the sleeve of his toga, blooming a sweet, utterly submissive smile: "If you beat him to death right now, tomorrow night’s game will lose its thrill. An exhausted beast—how can he offer you and the elders the ultimate blood sport?"

Servius paused. His squinted eyes blinked, then he burst into delighted laughter, pulling back his silver staff.

"Well said, my little doll! You’re entirely right! We must keep him alive... so he can taste absolute devastation!"

He waved a hand and turned toward the dungeon exit: "Fine, enough of this stench! Let's head up!"

Servius strode ahead, his heavy footsteps fading away. The jailer hurried to collect the torch and follow.

But Claudia did not leave immediately.

In that fleeting moment when the torch swept past, casting flickering light across the space between them, Jabari slowly lifted his head.

Their eyes locked.

It was neither a stealthy glance nor a panicky one.

Jabari’s eyes were deep, as black as a southern night, burning with a wild, indomitable fire. In those pupils, there was neither the fear of a chained captive nor the pleading of a man condemned to feed beasts.

Cold. Sharp. Overwhelming.

He looked at Claudia not as a haughty Roman noblewoman, nor as the wife of the man who had chained him. Those eyes pierced through her luxurious purple silk, stripped away her feigned smile, and peeled back every layer of the obedient facade she had labored to construct.

He was evaluating her.

Like a composed apex predator in the dark, seeing right through the cruelty, endurance, and hidden poison lurking in the brown eyes of the woman standing before her.

A numb, icy chill shot down Claudia’s spine. Her heart skipped a beat—not out of fear, but from a visceral shock. For the first time in Rome, someone had seen straight through her soul—not by her appearance, but through the resonance of those who carried dangerous blood.

The torchlight vanished behind the iron gate. Darkness instantly crashed down, swallowing Jabari’s form.

Yet those eyes—that wild fire behind the chains—had embedded themselves deep into Claudia’s mind, igniting a ruthless spark in her game of life and death.
