The Cost of Loving Mark

Chapter 26

Blood on the Stone Floor & An Unbroken Stride

The abandoned warehouse at Pier 4 reeked of rusted iron, bitter sea salt, and the damp mold of decaying cargo. Pale midday sunlight filtered through shattered glass panes in the towering corrugated tin roof, casting hazy dust motes that swayed in the silent air.

Maya came to with a throbbing, violent headache. It took her eyes a few seconds to make sense of her surroundings.

She and Mark were chained to a rusted steel support pillar in the middle of the second-floor loft area overlooking the warehouse. Below on the ground floor lay a vast expanse crammed with stacked, beat-up shipping containers. Surrounding them, over twenty men in leather jackets armed with handguns and iron pipes paced on patrol, their faces ruthless.

"Miss Maya... I'm really scared..." Mark cowered tight against Maya's side, pressing his small hands over his ears, his ash-grey eyes welling with tears.

Maya wrapped her arms tightly around the child, even though the iron cuffs bit into her wrists so hard they were bruised purple. She leaned close to Mark's ear, whispering soothingly through her own sheer terror: "Don't be scared, Mark... I'm right here... Your dad's gonna come save us..."

"Is daddy really coming, Miss Maya?" Mark sniffled.

Maya couldn't bring herself to answer. She knew how vicious this rival faction was. If Travis showed up alone and unarmed like they demanded, it was a total death trap!

CRASH!

The giant rolling iron door at the warehouse entrance was violently smashed inward.

The sheer impact shook the entire metallic framework of the building. Dust, debris, and shattered glass exploded everywhere.

All twenty-plus hitmen whipped their guns around, aiming straight at the entrance.

Through the swirling cloud of dust, a tall, muscular shadow stepped inside, taking slow, deliberate strides.

Travis.

He brought not a single bodyguard. He wore only his black shirt and a sharp vest, his dark hair combed back neatly. He came empty-handed, his arms hanging casually at his sides. His ash-grey eyes were chillingly calm, showing not a single trace of fear or hesitation before the dozens of gun barrels pointed at his chest.

"Ha! Look at the brave chairman!" The rival leader stepped out from behind a container, hefting a heavy iron pipe in his hand, a ruthless smirk curling his lips. "You really showed up alone and unarmed, Travis? Are you that arrogant, or do you just have a death wish?"

Travis came to a halt right in the middle of the ground floor, ten paces from the gang of hitmen. He raised his eyes, looking up at the second-floor loft—where Maya and Mark were chained.

The moment his ash-grey eyes locked onto Maya, a rare flash of gentleness flickered across them before vanishing instantly, replaced by a dark, wild, and utterly merciless killing intent.

"Let them go," Travis said, his voice low, flat, and sharp as a blade cutting through the air.

"Let 'em go?" The leader let out a loud cackle, then suddenly flicked his hand in a signal. "Break both his legs!"

Four burly thugs lunged forward instantly, swinging heavy iron pipes straight at Travis!

CRACK! THUD!

A sickening blow echoed through the warehouse as an iron pipe slammed squarely into his left shoulder.

Up on the loft, Maya screamed through her tears: "TRAVIS! NO!"

Travis didn't dodge. He stood firm as an ancient stone monolith, absorbing the full force of the hit that knocked his shoulder askew. But the moment the thug tried to yank the pipe back, Travis moved.

Fast as a hurricane!

His massive hand clamped around the thug's throat, twisting with a terrifying SNAP. The thug crumpled to the concrete floor without a single groan. Travis snatched the iron pipe, spun around, and delivered a thunderous kick straight to the second thug's chest.

BANG!

A deafening gunshot tore through the space.

A hitman perched atop a shipping container opened fire. The bullet slammed directly into Travis's right thigh!

Blood spurted out immediately, staining the tycoon's trousers dark. Travis jolted, his knee dropping to the cold concrete floor.

"DADDY!" Mark sobbed hysterically from the loft.

Maya slammed her body frantically against the iron cuffs, tears streaming unchecked: "Travis! Get out of here! Please, just run!"

Seeing his father ambushed and bleeding, Mark was so terrified that he extended his tiny hands, pressing them tight over Maya's eyes, sobbing through his tears: "Miss Maya, don't look... Daddy's hurt... Don't look..."

Yet through the gaps in the child's small fingers, Maya still witnessed the most horrific, magnificent nightmare of her life.

Travis was down on the concrete floor, blood pooling from his thigh. Thinking he was spent, five thugs charged him at once, raining iron pipes down onto his back and shoulders.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Travis knelt beneath the ruthless beatings, his black shirt torn to shreds, deep red blood soaking his back.

Yet he did not break!

The man slowly lifted his head. His ash-grey eyes retained not a shred of human reason. The wild fire of possession and lethal intent had burned away all sanity, transforming him into an enraged, wounded beast!

"Get off me!" Travis gritted out from deep in his throat—a sound like a predator's roar.

With his left hand, he drew the 9mm silver-plated handgun concealed in the small of his back!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three rapid gunshots echoed out. The three thugs in front of him dropped instantly into pools of blood.

The rest panicked. "He's got a gun! Kill him!"

The warehouse turned into a bloody slaughterhouse. Travis stood up on his blood-soaked legs. He moved like a spectre through the hail of bullets, putting down target after target. Every discharge from the silver handgun dropped a hitman. When the magazine ran dry, he used his bare hands to crush throats and snap the necks of anyone in his path.

Among those falling bloody at his feet were the very two goons who had covertly tailed Maya at the stone house, who had stalked her at Chloe's apartment. Travis targeted them directly, opening fire without a shred of mercy—a ruthless execution for those who dared touch his woman.

The rival leader backed away toward the loft stairs in utter terror: "You... You're a monster!"

BANG!

The final round from Travis's gun caught the leader straight between the eyes. The man fell backward, collapsing onto the staircase landing.

The gunfire fell completely silent.

The vast warehouse sank into a deadly quiet, leaving only the thick reek of gunpowder and the heavy stench of blood in the air.

Over twenty hitmen lay completely wiped out across the stone floor.

Travis stood alone in the center of the bloodbath.

His body was covered in injuries. His torn black shirt was drenched in fresh blood, and the gunshot wound on his thigh bled continuously. He gasped for air, his broad frame trembling from sheer exhaustion and massive blood loss.

He slowly raised his head, looking up at the loft.

Mark lowered his hands from Maya's eyes. The five-year-old froze, sobbing silently as he looked at his proud father, who now looked like a ghost stepping straight out of the underworld.

Maya looked down at the blood-covered man on the ground floor, her heart aching as if pierced by a thousand blades. She felt no more fear, no more guilt—only a profound heartbreak and an intense, late-blooming love burning fiercely inside her.

Travis lifted his bloody legs, taking slow, agonizing steps up the iron stairs leading to the loft.

Thud... thud... thud...

Every step left a heavy streak of fresh blood on the metal risers.

He reached the loft. The silver handgun slipped from his grip, hitting the floor with a sharp CLANG.

Travis walked up to Maya. His ash-grey eyes, once cold and ruthless, now flickered with an ultimate gentleness and relief. He pulled a master key from his pocket, his trembling hand fitting it into the iron cuffs binding Maya and Mark.

Click! Click!

The iron cuffs fell away.

Mark lunged forward, grabbing his father's shoulders: "Daddy! Daddy!"

Yet Travis's final reserve of strength was completely drained.

His massive frame faltered, then collapsed with a heavy THUD onto the stone floor right in front of Maya.

"TRAVIS!" Maya screamed, rushing forward, pulling his heavy, hot, blood-soaked body into her lap.

Travis lay across her lap, his breathing shallow and faint. Maya's tears fell unchecked, streaming down his battered, blood-streaked face: "Travis... Don't close your eyes! Please... Don't leave me!"

Travis's large, bruised, blood-stained hand slowly, tremblingly reached up.

Using the last of his weak strength, he reached toward Maya's face, his fingers lightly brushing her tear-drenched cheek. His chiseled lips slowly curled into a faint, contented smile:

"I... I kept you safe... Maya..."

His blood-stained hand slipped from her cheek, dropping limply to the cold stone floor. His ash-grey eyes fluttered shut, and he sank completely into the void.

"TRAVIS!" Maya's desperate scream echoed through the dark expanse of the warehouse, blending with the sound of rain beginning to pound against the tin roof outside.
