The Cost of Loving Mark

Chapter 24

Confession in the Rain

The old apartment on the south slope of San Francisco sank into a suffocating quiet. The autumn rain had poured without pause for days, heavy drops beating against windowpanes fogged over with a dim layer of condensation. Though it was barely five in the evening, dark shadows had already claimed the corners of the room, dyeing the space in a desolate grey hue.

Maya sat on the worn armchair, her hands wrapped around a mug of warm water that had long gone cold. Across the room, little Mark lay curled up on the small couch, his eyes shut tight, his breathing steady after a tearful episode earlier that afternoon. Watching the child made Maya's heart ache. Over the past few days, Mark had managed to smile during brief moments of playtime, but whenever night fell, the fear of the dark and the longing for his father drained every bit of innocence from his five-year-old face.

BOOM!

A massive thunderclap crashed down from the dark cloud bank off the coast, rattling the old glass window frames.

At that exact moment, the living room ceiling light flickered and died. The apartment plummeted into pitch blackness.

"Maya..." Chloe stepped out from the kitchen holding a small flashlight, her voice shaking with alarm. "I’ve got a really bad feeling about this. Down in the parking lot... I think a few cars just pulled up."

Maya's heart leaped straight into her throat. She bolted up, stepped close to the edge of the curtain, and pulled back a tiny slit to peek down at the rain-soaked street.

At the bottom of the slope, four glossy black SUVs with no license plates were parked in a tight line, completely blocking the apartment building's only exit. Men in black suits holding large umbrellas stepped out and formed a perimeter. But what made the blood freeze solid in Maya's veins was the silhouette stepping out of the lead vehicle.

Travis.

He held no umbrella. The freezing rain poured directly onto his disheveled black hair, soaking through his black shirt, which was open at the top two buttons. In the dark storm, his broad, muscular frame looked like a monster straight out of hell that had finally tracked down its prey. He raised his eyes and looked straight up at the third floor—right where the faint beam of Chloe's flashlight gleamed through the window. Those ash-grey eyes were razor-sharp and ruthless, yet burning with an almost terrifying intensity.

"Oh my God... he found us!" Chloe gasped, her face drained of all color as she rushed over to hold Mark, who was rubbing his eyes and sitting up confused. "Maya, what do we do?! Should we call the cops—"

"No cop can interfere with his family, Chloe," Maya whispered. Her hands were shaking, but a strange, quiet calm settled over her eyes. "There's no running from this. I'm going down to talk to him."

"Are you out of your mind?! He's gonna kill you!"

"If he wanted me dead, he wouldn't be standing out in the rain like that," Maya turned to look at Mark, stepping over gently to stroke the boy's head. "Stay here with Mark. Don't let him come outside."

Maya threw on her worn grey cardigan—frayed at the hem—turned the door handle, and stepped down the dark concrete stairs.

The building's heavy iron door pushed open, and the roaring wind and rain instantly swallowed the air.

Maya stepped onto the stone porch. The skin-piercing cold of the mountain mist soaked straight through her thin coat, but she kept her back straight, her bare feet planted on the freezing stone floor, facing the man stepping slowly up the stairs toward her.

The suits in black immediately backed away a few paces, forming a wide circle around the two of them under the pouring downpour.

Travis stopped on the step right before her. Barely a few feet separated them. Rainwater ran down the hard, chiseled angles of his face, highlighting the dark circles under his ash-grey eyes—eyes murky with exhaustion, wild passion, and resentment. Over a week had passed since the night she fled; he looked leaner, his cheekbones more defined, but the absolute dominance emanating from his body still made the surrounding air feel dense enough to suffocate.

"You're good at running, Maya," Travis spoke, his voice deep and raspy from exhaustion and cigarettes, carrying over the drumming rain. "Turning my only son into your accomplice... using a five-year-old kid to pull off an escape... Did you honestly think you could get away from me?"

Maya clenched her hands into tight fists, suppressing her body's shivering against the cold, and gritted her teeth in response:

"I didn't run, Travis! I just took back the free life you stole from me! You locked me up, turned me into a prisoner in your golden cage, and now you bring a whole army here for what? To put chains on me all over again?!"

Looking at the small girl before him—though her body was frail and her clothes tattered, her eyes still burned with an unyielding fire of defiance—a bitter smile unexpectedly curled the corner of Travis's lips.

He took a step forward. Instinctively, Maya backed up an inch, but her back hit the cold iron door behind her. Travis raised his large, rain-soaked hand. Maya closed her eyes tight, bracing herself for a sharp slap or a cruel grip around her neck.

Yet his warm palm merely rested gently against her pale, freezing cheek. His thumb brushed softly over the young teacher's dry, cracked lips with a tenderness so painful it was chilling.

"I didn't come here to put chains on you, Maya," Travis whispered, his hot breath brushing against her face amidst the icy rain. "Do you really think... bringing you to the castle, keeping you in the north wing... was all just about Mark's safety, or the twisted whim of a man in power?"

Maya snapped her eyes open, angrily shoving his hand away. "Stop lying! You imprisoned me, you violated me, you crushed my self-respect! You cared about me as nothing more than a toy!"

"A toy?" Travis let out a harsh, bitter laugh that rang out against the rolling thunder. He leaned in, bracing both hands heavily against the stone wall on either side of her head, trapping Maya completely inside his broad, rain-soaked chest.

He stared deep into her flickering eyes, every word delivered like a blow shattering every wall she had tried so hard to build:

"Do you remember fifteen years ago, Maya? At that run-down orphanage on the east side of San Francisco?"

Maya froze. Her entire body went rigid.

"There was a massive storm that night, and part of the wooden roof collapsed," Travis's voice dropped low, becoming distant and ancient like a ghost of a memory. "An eight-year-old girl, her thin fingers bleeding with broken nails, spent two whole hours digging through the rubble to pull out a soaked orphan boy whose leg was pinned under a stone... That little girl held him and whispered in his ear, 'Don't be scared, I'm right here. We're gonna make it.'"

Maya's eyes widened to their absolute limit. The blood in her body seemed to stop flowing.

Vague, dark memories of her childhood—when she lived in state care before being adopted—came rushing back with violent force. The night the orphanage collapsed... as a poor, helpless child, she had saved a boy...

"That boy..." Maya's voice trembled uncontrollably, her lips stumbling over the words: "That boy... was you...?"

"It was me!" Travis gritted out, his ash-grey eyes darkening with decades of suppressed emotion. "The very first day I saw you with my son at that school, I looked into your background and realized you were that same girl. And watching you after that, I saw the small scar on your left ear, that same stubborn glare that refuses to break!"

Travis gripped her shoulders, his rapid breathing delivering every word straight into Maya's shattering mind:

"I looked for you for fifteen years, Maya! But when I finally found you, everything turned out like this. I never meant to lock you away, but you wanted so badly to leave me... I had no other choice... Because I love you..."

"No... You're lying!" Maya shook her head violently, tears spilling out and mixing with the rain. "If you loved me... why that night...? Why did you force yourself on me?! You used Mark to threaten me!"

Travis went silent. A ruthless yet raw, naked emotion flickered in his ash-grey eyes. He leaned down close to her ear, his voice a dark whisper that stripped away every layer of self-deception Maya had used to shield herself over the past days:

"I admit... I lost my mind that night. Mentioning Mark, showing that child gentleness while giving me nothing but hatred... it triggered the darkest possessive instincts inside me. I forced my strength on you... But Maya..."

Travis lifted his head, looking straight into her eyes, his lip curling into a bitter smile:

"Ask yourself... That night, once my touch pushed past your initial resistance... when I held you in the dark... were you really fighting me off? Or was it you... that feeling buried deep under all that hatred... that made you respond to me? You drowned in it right alongside me, Maya! You wanted that fire just as much as I did!"

"Stop... Just stop it!" Maya cried out, clapping her hands tight over her ears, her body shivering like a leaf in a storm.

"You're lying to yourself!" Travis grabbed her wrists, pulling her hands away from her ears, forcing her to face reality. "You say you hate me, you call me a ruthless monster... but deep down, you've been drawn to me since day one! You hate me because I called out your weakness—because you realized you didn't hate my touch at all!"

His words landed like a brutal sentence, shattering the last of Maya's defenses.

The sleepless nights in the old apartment, the burning memories of that intense passion she had tried to label as "coercion" or a "physical reflex"... were now stripped bare beneath the storm. She hated him, but she was completely consumed by him. That raw truth broke her soul into a thousand pieces.

Her tears poured out unchecked. She buried her face into his soaked chest, sobbing out loud:

"Why... Why do you have to be like this...? You're insane... a cold, crazy bastard..."

Travis didn't push her away. He wrapped his arms tightly around her small, shivering body, resting his chin on her wet hair, taking a deep breath as if filling a void in his chest that had been empty for days.

"I'm crazy about you, Maya," he whispered, his deep voice carrying a desperate plea for the first time in his life. "Come home with me. Back to the castle... I promise no one will ever hurt you again."

Maya wept until she had no strength left. After a long silence filled only with the sound of pouring rain and their heavy breathing, she slowly pushed against his chest.

She raised her tear-streaked face, looking into his ash-grey eyes filled with quiet anticipation, and whispered with firm resolve:

"I... I need time. Give me time to think... Travis."

Travis looked at her for a long, quiet moment. Finally, he nodded.

"Fine. I'll give you time," he released her, taking a step back into the rain. "I'll be waiting right down here in the car. As long as it takes... I'll wait."

Maya turned and dragged her unsteady feet back up to the third floor.

The door closed behind her, shutting out the storm. Chloe rushed over to support her, her eyes wide with worry: "Maya! Are you okay? What did he do to you?!"

Maya didn't answer. She walked straight into the small bedroom, where Mark sat cross-legged on the bed, his round eyes fixed on her.

When he saw his teacher walk in soaked to the bone with tears streaming down her face, Mark scampered over and wrapped his arms around her cold legs: "Miss Maya... Is daddy downstairs? Did he come to take us back?"

Maya knelt down and pulled Mark's tiny frame close to her heart.

Looking at the child's innocent face, hearing his rapid heartbeat, memories of her own childhood flooded Maya's mind once again. Once upon a time, she had been an abandoned orphan, desperately longing for a home, for someone to protect her. And the boy in the rubble fifteen years ago... the boy she had risked her life to save... was the very man standing down in the rain waiting for her.

Torment surged through Maya's heart.

Do I really hate him?

Or from the very beginning, did his ruthlessness, his loneliness, and his intense, twisted love touch the darkest, most broken part of my soul? Did I fall for my captor... without even knowing it?

She remembered Mark's smile over the past few days, and then remembered him crying out for his father in his sleep every night. Mark needed a dad. And as for herself... maybe she couldn't run from that man any longer either.

Maya gently released Mark, wiped the tears from his cheeks, and spoke softly:

"Mark... Let's go home, sweetheart. Your daddy's waiting downstairs."

Mark's eyes lit up instantly. "For real?! Daddy's not mad at us anymore, Miss Maya?"

"He's not mad," Maya managed a faint, bitter smile, stroking his hair. "He came to take us home."

Half an hour later, Maya held Mark's hand as they walked down the apartment stairs.

Under the continuous downpour, Travis was still standing in the exact same spot, soaked to the skin, his ash-grey eyes flinching with emotion as he saw the two figures step out from the iron doorway.

The moment Mark saw his father, he let go of Maya's hand and sprinted forward, throwing his arms around Travis's legs. "Daddy!"

Travis bent down, lifted his only son up, and held him tight against his chest. Looking over Mark's head, his eyes locked onto Maya as she slowly approached.

"I'm coming back with you," Maya said softly, her voice raspy from crying, her dark eyes meeting his.

Travis didn't say a word. He opened the door to the black SUV, let Mark climb in first, and then helped Maya into the back seat.

The ride back to the Gothic castle took place in total silence, but the air between them had shifted completely. Gone was the tension, the defiance, and the fear—left behind was a quiet, heavy understanding and a thousand unanswered questions.

When the SUV rolled through the massive iron gates of the Gothic estate, Maya looked out the window in sheer disbelief.

Far from the gloomy, dark "iron cage" it had been before...

Every chandelier across the courtyard and hallways was ablaze with brilliant light. The castle's massive wooden front doors were thrown wide open. Staff stood lined up on both sides, bowing respectfully in welcome.

The vehicle came to a stop in front of the main foyer. Travis stepped out first, then turned around, reaching out his large hand to help Maya down.

The moment Maya's feet touched the red carpet in the foyer, Travis suddenly stopped in his tracks right in front of her.

Before the stunned eyes of dozens of servants and his senior lieutenants—men who had never seen the high-and-mighty head of the family bow to anyone—Travis slowly lowered his head in front of Maya.

"I'm sorry, Maya," Travis spoke in a deep, clear tone that echoed through the stone hall. "For all the pain and captivity I put you through."

The staff held their breath. Maya stood rooted to the spot, her whole body trembling in shock.

This ruthless, intense man... the one who had controlled her every breath... was bowing to apologize to her for the first time in his life.

He lifted his head and handed her his personal smartphone—the one he had strictly forbidden her from ever touching before—and spoke gently:

"Starting today, you're completely free. The north wing cell is locked forever. You can go wherever you want, call whoever you want. This castle... is your home now, if you want to stay."

With that, Travis carried Mark and turned toward the stairs, leaving Maya standing alone in the bright, glowing hall.

Maya looked down at the phone in her hand, then watched Travis's tall figure vanish down the corridor. A strange, haunting feeling swirled deep in her heart.

She asked herself... Did she choose to return for the innocent child who needed a father, for the lonely, broken boy from fifteen years ago... or had her soul secretly fallen in love with this brilliant iron cage all along?

Meanwhile, in a high-rise building deep within the financial district of North San Francisco...

In a pitch-black room lit only by flickering computer monitors, a middle-aged man in a grey suit took a long drag from his cigarette, his ruthless gaze fixed on a covert photograph of Maya and Travis in the rain earlier that afternoon.

"Well, well..." the man said in a raspy voice, a sinister smile creeping onto his lips. "The cold-blooded chairman of the Travis family... a man with zero weaknesses for ten years... loses his damn mind over a dirt-poor intern teacher, ready to break his alliance vow with the opposition."

A lieutenant stepped forward, bowing his head. "Boss, should we move ahead with kidnapping the kid, Mark?"

"No," the man snuffed out his cigarette in a silver tray, his eyes glinting with a chilling cruelty. "The kid is guarded way too heavily. But this little teacher... Maya... she's Travis's real Achilles' heel."

The man stood up, stepping close to a map of the city:

"Pass the order down. Forget the kid. Focus everything on the girl. Once we've got Maya in our grip... we'll make Travis get on his knees and hand over his entire empire."
