When someone leaves me, my brain decides they are never coming back. Eleven people have proved it right. Rook Calder is the lawyer Harlowe's richest families call when something needs to disappear. The night I found him with his shoe on a man's chest, I had a panic attack at his feet, and he did the one thing nobody outside my family has ever done. He stayed. Then he had me followed for three weeks. Then he stopped. So I found him. It took seventy-one hours. I bought the apartment across from his bedroom and the company that cleans his office, and he never once called the police. Here is my problem: sooner or later everyone leaves, and when they do, I leave first. Here is his: he checks every lock three times. Now he checks on me. What happens when a woman who is always waiting to be left falls for a man who cannot stop making sure she is still there?
