Jabari’s thick, gravelly whisper, reeking of fresh blood and fierce vitality, lashed across Claudia’s face like a cruel flame. His scorching breath coiled around the pale skin of her neck, tearing away the last shred of dignity she was desperately clutching.

Claudia stood paralyzed. Her tear-blurred brown eyes locked fiercely onto the chiseled, sweat-streaked, and blood-crusted face of the southern general. Within the gloomy darkness of the dungeon, his pitch-black pupils held neither a flicker of supplication nor collapse. They burned with the proud lethal intent of someone holding the upper hand, even though his body was bound tight against the wet stone wall and his blood-drenched back had just been torn open by ten lashes from an oxhide whip.

"You..." Claudia’s throat choked up. Swallowing the bitter taste rising in her throat, she spoke in a fractured, trembling voice: "Do you think this is your game, Jabari? You are nothing but a captive! The blood on your body was drawn by my hands!"

A brutal, mocking half-smile twitched across Jabari’s blood-crusted lips. He did not evade; instead, slowly channeling strength into his shackled wrists, he stepped a short stride closer toward her within the limits permitted by his chains. The distance between them shrank until Claudia could feel the rapid, powerful pounding of his heart within his rugged chest.

"My blood flows, but my soul remains my own, matron," Jabari lowered his voice, every word falling like a thin blade slicing across her eardrums. "And you? Look at your own hands. Do you think you are using the authority of a master to punish me? No... You are turning yourself into a demon of this hell just to please your old husband. You are the one growing filthier with every single lash."

"Shut your mouth!" Claudia gritted her teeth, raising a trembling hand as if to strike a blow across his arrogant face.

Yet her fingers froze mid-air, mere inches from his blood-smeared cheek. Jabari’s scorching, fire-like skin radiated a heat that numbed her fingertips. She could not bring herself to strike. The terrifying clarity within his eyes had completely stripped away the feigned authority she had forced herself to wear.

Jabari tilted his head slightly, meeting her suspended hand with a cold smirk: "Strike. Or pick up the whip and continue. But no matter how you shred this back, you can never erase the truth... that every night you step down here, you need me far more than I need your mercy."

Claudia jerked her hand back as if touching a red-hot iron bar. Stepping back, her breathing came fast and shallow, her chest heaving beneath her coarse grey linen tunic soaked in cold sweat. Silence reclaimed the dungeon, broken only by the spitting, crackling sound of beast-fat torches against the mossy black stone walls. Turning on her heel, she hurried away from the dungeon like a defeated soldier, leaving behind the towering figure of the southern general quietly tracking her panicked footsteps in the dark.

In the days that followed, the boundary between authority and subjugation beneath the Suburra began to undergo a violent transformation.

Whenever morning broke and Servius Tullo left the villa for the Senate or to handle slave trades in the square, Claudia quietly descended to the dungeon. She carried a jar of python fat, rough linen strips, and a cup of warm water.

She lied to herself, calling it mere "responsibility". She told herself she only went down to check whether the wounds on Jabari’s back were gangrene-ridden, or simply to ensure the jailer had not cut his rations. She conjured thousands of logical excuses to justify her footsteps automatically guiding her down the foul, gloomy stone passageway.

Yet beneath the silent earth, when nothing remained save the steady drip of water from the stone ceiling onto the prison ledge, the space belonged entirely to the two of them.

Claudia knelt on one knee upon the freezing stone floor. Extending her slender hand, she gently smoothed a strip of coarse cloth soaked in warm water across Jabari’s chiseled cheek and rugged neck to cleanse the crusting, dried blood. Her fingers trembled slightly whenever they brushed against his fever-hot, coal-like skin.

"You tend to a captive with such meticulous care, as though polishing a stone statue in a temple," Jabari slowly broke the silence. His raspy, muffled whisper echoed through the cramped space. He did not move, merely tilting his head slightly as his dark eyes pinned her pale face. "What does the Matron of the Suburra seek from a man about to be whittled down to the bone?"

Claudia did not lift her head. Brushing the cloth aside, she pressed down a fraction harder over a shallow slash along his jawline, drawing a soft grunt from deep within Jabari’s throat.

"I seek nothing," she lowered her voice, struggling to keep her breathing even. "I am merely ensuring you do not collapse and rot from gangrene before I am done using you."

"Done using me?" A brutal, sarcastic half-smile twitched across Jabari’s chapped lips. The iron chains around his wrists rattled as he leaned forward slightly. "Do you borrow my hands to dream of an uprising, Claudia? A naive noblewoman trapped inside a gilded cage believing she has the grit to play a game of life and death with that old fox?"

"What do you know of my cage?" Claudia abruptly halted her hand. Her eyes constricted as she gritted her teeth, dragging the cloth fiercely across the bleeding wound on his shoulder. "You are a general, Jabari. You lost a battle, were bound in iron chains, and cast down here. You suffer physical agony, but at least you once had a choice in how you lived and how you fought."

"And what of you?" Jabari did not evade her fury. Pressing his sweat-slicked face closer, he exhaled a breath smelling hot of iron against the pale skin of her neck. "Were you never given a choice?"

"I was sold," Claudia whispered, her voice slender yet hardened and bitter. She stared blankly at the jar of python fat resting on the stone floor. "When I was sixteen, my Claudii family fell deep into debt. My father—a proud patrician of ancient blood—took my hand and led me into Servius Tullo’s chamber reeking of sour wine as though presenting a commodity. He sold me in exchange for three hundred thousand denarii and five estates on the outskirts of Rome."

She smiled—a smile of utter, corrosive bitterness:

"The very first night that elderly husband touched me, he told me that while my silk garments were soft, they could never compare to the sight of a daughter of the house of Claudii kneeling to lick spilled wine from his shoes. To him, I was never a wife. I was aristocratic honor bought with coin, which he shattered with his own hands every night to sate the insidious inferiority complex of a man crawling out of the Suburra mud."

Jabari fell silent. The usual arrogance and teasing mockery vanished from the general's chiseled features, yielding to a deep, frozen abyss. He saw the bruises hidden beneath her coarse grey tunic, witnessing the exhaustion gnawing away at her soul day by day.

"And so..." Jabari spoke, his gravelly whisper unnaturally calm, "...you choose to wield that oxhide whip every night, choosing to tear my flesh with your own hands... merely to reclaim the feeling that you are not the sole creature being tortured in this cell?"

Claudia’s lips quivered as she reached out to smear a dab of cold python fat across his hip wound, evading his question.

"And you, Jabari?" she fired back, her voice growing hoarse. "You endure my lashes, you endure Servius’s perverted power without a single plea. Your Kavanu nation... where are your warriors?"

A cold, hateful smirk flashed through the southern general's eyes. Tilting his head back, he rested it against the cold stone wall.

"My Kavanu was a land kissed by sunlight," Jabari said slowly, uttering his homeland's name in a deep, resonant native tongue. "There, I once led ten thousand warriors, riding steeds as black as the midnight sky, sweeping away any Roman army daring to cross our southern borders. But I trusted a traitor. He opened the city gates to the Roman legions on a stormy night. Ten thousand of my brothers... burned alive inside their own barracks. I was struck down from behind, bound in foul iron, and dragged across thousands of miles of rugged road to serve as a joke for the Roman rabble."

Turning his head, he locked his lethal, blazing gaze directly into hers:

"Servius believes he has broken me. He believes he is using you to humiliate a southern general. But he does not know... every lash you lay across my back, every drop of blood I spill upon this stone ledge, only drives my thirst to tear out his throat into a wilder frenzy."

Claudia stood paralyzed. The dungeon felt choked with the bitterness and hatred both of them had laid bare.

"We are both trapped inside cages," Claudia whispered, her hand instinctively resting against his heaving, muscular chest.

"The difference is..." Jabari brought his sweat-slicked face close to her ear, his scorching breath reeking of fresh blood enveloping her pale skin, "...I know my cage is made of iron, while you still deceive yourself into thinking yours is made of silk. If you wish to escape, Claudia... you must learn to stain your hands with real blood."

Claudia shuddered. Within that fleeting moment inside the dark daytime cell, the guard between executioner and punished completely collapsed, yielding to a grotesque and terrifyingly unbreakable bond.

Jabari’s composure, blazing lethality, and soul-piercing words gradually became the sole poison preventing Claudia’s spirit from complete collapse. Upstairs, she was a plaything trampled by Servius whenever his perverted lust flared. Yet only when stepping down into this foul dungeon by day, touching the blood, flesh, and scorching breath of the southern general with her own hands, did she feel she truly existed. In him, she found a mirror reflecting her own pain and rebellious defiance.

On the fifth consecutive night, heavy footsteps accompanied by the sharp rapping of a gem-inlaid silver staff against stone echoed down the corridor. Servius Tullo descended once more, clutching a jar of soured wine, his face flushed with sickened lust. Bellowing harshly, he ordered the jailer to unlock the iron gate, demanding his familiar blood sport to sate his perverted psyche.

"Begin, my little doll!" Servius roared with glee, collapsing into the sheepskin wicker chair outside the cell. "Give him fifteen lashes tonight! I want to see this beast brought to his knees begging!"

Claudia stood at the top of the stairs leading down to the dungeon. The coarse grey servant's tunic chafed against the still-raw wounds across her thighs and hips. Staring down into the fathomless dark below, where the beast-fat torch cast a blood-red glow.

Slowly extending her slender hand, she prepared to lift the triple-thonged oxhide whip from its rack.

Yet the exact second her fingers brushed the cold wooden handle, Claudia abruptly froze.

Looking down at her slender hands beneath the flickering torchlight, she saw her fingers trembling violently—a tremor rolling from her wrists up to her slender shoulders.

Slowly, she clenched her fingers tight. On the first night, her hands shook with self-loathing, with sheer terror before humiliation and collapse. On the second and third nights, her hands shook from exhaustion and inner turmoil.

Yet tonight, right before stepping down those dungeon stairs...

Claudia realized with a jolt that the tremor running through her veins was no longer fear or disgust.

It was anticipation. Her hands shook with craving—she longed to step down those dark stairs, longed to bring the whip down across Jabari’s blood-soaked back, and longed to see his deep, dark, ruthless eyes lock onto hers in the dark. She realized she had utterly succumbed to this demonic game.
